2005-09-30 Interesting books I read a couple of interesting books recently. Actually, I read them both half a month ago or longer, but I've been too busy to write anything about them. I still don't have time to do them justice, but here are some notes about NeeChee™ and Roland Barthes.

2005-09-22 Back to school! Classes have started again, and so now I have no time whatsoever to do silly things like post to the blog, &c.

Also, I'm taking Elementary Ancient Greek (Attic) every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Hooray!!!

2005-09-19 Cool Auction I just found out (through Neil Gaiman's blog) about a really cool charity auction: A bunch of writers are auctioning off the chance to be in their next novel. Highlights:

Stephen King:"One character name in a novel called CELL, which is now in work and which will appear in either 2006 or 2007. Buyer should be aware that CELL is a violent piec... more->

I have no idea what this sign, posted all over campus, was supposed to mean... Surely it strongly implies, "Email us and we will impregnate you and force you to carry the baby to term."

2005-09-14 Advent Children

I just found out (via Penny Arcade) that Square-Enix (didn't they go out of business?) is making a sequel to Final Fantasy VII, called Advent Children. I'll admit that making a sequel to a game that is already the nominal sixth sequel to "Final Fantasy" is more than a little odd, but really the FF games have never had very much in common with each other. Also, of course, Advent Childr... more->

2005-09-12 Three stages of activist art... Fuzzy just sent me this article analyzing art from the perspective that it is created in three stages: activist (Uncle Tom's Cabin), post-activist (Huckleberry Finn), and Acceptance (no clear example, better just read the thing. It's short).

I really like this approach to criticism; I think they're really on to something.

2005-09-09 Katrina Photos

This is from Metafilter, and it's easily the best reportage I've seen about New Orleans. Basically a series of photos from someone how was there for the first four days and had a really nice camera.

Very intereting to not... more->

2005-09-08 Bush = Jesus It occurred to me that, to be fair, the Christ of the New Testament was also charismatic, recklessly spiritual, and apocalyptic. Some might argue that He had more a right to it... and others might argue that it didn't really work out so well for his people, either.

2005-09-08 Bush = Hitler Many people have attempted to equate George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler, but most of these analogies are worthless, at best. Bush is not a fascist, a military imperialist, an obsessive bigot nor an architect of genocide. Anyone who believes otherwise is merely being hyperbolic and childish (nb. but note the inclusion of the terms "obsessive", "military", and "architect", which are possibly important ones to add). Bush is wildly different from Hitler in a number... more->

2005-09-06 Anniversary Dinner This year the fifth of September (our four year anniversary) was on Labor Day, so I decided that I would cook Romantic Dinner. This was only possible because I had spent six hours cleaning the kitchen on Saturday, and Katya had spent the same amount of time cleaning the living room. For the first time in ages we have a civilized place to cook, and a reasonable place to eat the things we've cooked! W00T!

2005-09-06 Argh. Eddy the Escort (my brnad-new--to me--car) is out of commision. More details when I know then, but I'm guessing that it's the alternator. I had to get towed to the mechanic's this morning, blar.

THIS JUST IN: Breaking news!
The mechanics says it's the alternator, and he can replace it for $190, including labor, with a three-year warantee. No idea how much alternators should cost (he said they usually cost $220, for what it's worth) but for a Major Car Repair of any sort $190 seems pretty good.

2005-09-02 Sound of Thunder So, there's this new movie out, called Sound of Thunder. It's based on that Ray Bradbury story about going back in time and screwing up the future, and apparently it has saber-toothed eagles soaring over future-Chicago.
