2003-02-26 Untitled ARGH
I got my first personal rejection letter just now, from all of the resumes I've sent out. I was rejected point blank because of the resume itself, and I'm not sure how to deal with that, really. One the one hand, it was really cool of this guy to let me know what was up, on the other hand, maybe he's a superficial jerk?
There were two typos ('techncial' and 'mySQL') and I suppose that a zero-tolerance policy for resume typos is... to be expected, or something. He also complained that the ... more->

2003-02-25 Music Theory
Damn, but Music theory is difficult! Admittedly it would be a lot easier if I took a class or something, instead of trying to learn Everything in two days from the Internet. I read a couple of good sites, and then had a conversation with my friend Nathan. Hoo ha. Tetra-diatonic acidentals, blah.
I'm writing this program, see, that will take sheet music in any key, transpose it to any key (presumably D) and output fiddle tab. Heh. Good luck, right? Still, it's coming along. I think I fi... more->

2003-02-25 Untitled Corporate America I had a harrowing experience this evening -- I went to apply for a job at Radio Shack. Radio Shack -- you've got questions, we've got demeaning positions for hardly any pay.
I don't know if I'll have to take the job yet, indeed it hasn't even been offered. The benefits are great: medical, vision, tuition (for full time employees) &c. I don't want to play the whole game, though, suck up to my manager, claim to love Radio Shack, and become a part of the happy corporate family. Mayb... more->

2003-02-23 Moby I had a strange dream last night, where Katya and myself and Jennifer Gergen were in New York... with Moby. I really wanted us all to have a squirt-gun fight, but obviously we couldn't in our current clothing. Katya had thought ahead (or something?) and had on appropriate clothes and a squirt gun, but Jenn and Moby and I had to buy suitable outfits. At the Gap. White turtlenecks and black sweaters are, apparently, necessary for squirt-gunning in New York this season. Fortunately, the Gap also so... more->

2003-02-21 Untitled What to say?
I wondered if this would happen. I'm just not sure that my life is really interesting enough, even for me, to maintain a current up-to-date blog. Or, rather, when I have time to be writing in my blog, my life is boring. When my life is boring, who has time for a blog?
I went to Borders to apply for a job today, and happened to notice a sign saying that William Gibson would be there in half an hour to sign his new book. Of course I sat down to wait, and picked up a copy... I ended u... more->

2003-02-14 Untitled The Magnetic Fields sing some songs that really, really describe how I would feel if Katya and I ever broke up. These are very sad songs, and I would do almost anything to avoid sympathizing with them. Statistically I feel pretty good, it seems to me that most relationships among the 20-something set are either over in the morning or last a long, long time... and then, of course there's my great-aunt, whose husband asked for a divorce after forty-four years. On the plus side, I have another relative ... more->

2003-02-13 Untitled Corn Mo
The thing about Corn Mo is that he is really strange, and puerile, but very, very sincere. I think sincerity really makes up for a lot of other things. 'I Wish you Were my Home' is basically a love song, and even during that bit where he sings about the old man guiding them around through wooden replicas of Mr. T and Laverne and Shirley, it is clear that those things mean something, at least to Corn Mo.
And sure, it's silly to sing so sincerely about the fact that 'Cheese is goo... more->

2003-02-13 Untitled Natural Language Casting
It's only 11:40, but I feel as tired as I did yesterday at 2:00 am. Anyway, I wanted to get this idea down before I forgot about it entirely. The other day I was trying to describe red velvet cake to my partener, Katya. She asked me what it was like and I told her that it was red, the only distinguishing thing I knew about red velvet cake. She then asked me what flavor it was, and I was unable to reply. 'Is it red flavor?' she asked.
Ordinarily our mind auto-casts, lik... more->

2003-02-12 Why I Want to be Rich It used to be that I just wanted to be rich so that I could pay my rent and buy sushi for my partner on occasion (like this Friday, yay!). But then I started looking at electric violins.... Anyway, for somewhere between two and three grand, I could own one of these:
Yes, that is a violin. sigh There is also a more->

2003-02-11 Untitled I was listening to Half Japanese, an indie band that could also be Modest Mouse without the yelling, or Dead Milkmen without the lyrics. Now I'm not, I'm listening to David Bowie, material recorded just after he'd released his first album. So, in theory he should be just as skilled as Modest Mouse of Half Japanese, right? Then why does he sound so much better in every way? *sigh*. --

2003-02-10 Untitled I spent the entire day in bed yesterday. It was wonderful. The only time I left my room was to eat pancakes with Katya and to watch Monsters, Inc. I really love just spending time with her, not rushing about and Doing Things, but just talking.

2003-02-06 Untitled The Sisters of Mercy.... I was just listening to Vision Thing, and had a sudden, visceral flash of Brown's driveway, and his back porch, and of playing Magic: The Gathering there. Later on we switched to Legend of the Five Rings. Time moves so quickly, really. It seems that that must have been no later than 1996 or 1997, because after my first couple of years in college I wasn't ever around... that's five and a half years ago. --

2003-02-05 Untitled Work, blargh. I don't like it. Earning cash, though, that's good. I much prefer making money the way I did yesterday: I filled out some tax forms online, let everyone know that I didn't make anything to speak of last year, and the government is returning $1000 to me. W00t, that's the way to do it! However, it is fun to implement ROT13 encryption in Flash, which is what I've been doing all morning. In this context, I think my encryption scheme is unbreakable -- it would require so much work, result in ... more->

2003-02-04 Untitled I still don't have a debit card, but they finally gave me an ATM card, so at least I'm not longer pathetically dependant upon Katya whenever the bank is closed. They also apoligized profusely, which was nice, and gave me an AM/FM clock radio... which was a bit bizarre. --

2003-02-03 Untitled Ok, ok, time to go. I've been working on a new layout for this site but, as I have no graphic design skills, it is very time consuming and not very rewarding. I'm off to the Goodman Theatre to apply for a job -- as a cashier at the bakery. Ah, well, maybe Jennifer Tipton will see me working there and invite me to be her assistant..... (: --

2003-02-02 Job My friend Tony explained the story of Job to me tonight. This isimpressive, because I haven't understood that story before, ever. From the moment I first encountered it, probably fifteen years ago ormore, my reaction has always been "Ick. A god like that doesn't deserveour love, it deserves our unyielding and bitter defiance. Job was acoward, and he should have had some pride and spat in God's face, &c."I still don't like the god of Job, but I like the story, I think, a lot. Here it goes, there are th... more->
